Waterford Hills Road Racing welcomed the Great Lakes Challenge Series for their season opening races this weekend (June 5th & 6th). The rain also made a second straight appearance for the season.
All the groups had clear track during the Saturday racing activities.
Group #1
Group one was the biggest race group of the weekend with 21 cars taking the green flag. Spec Miata had a different winner each day. #4 Randy Shaw took the victory in the Saturday class race. Last weekend's Southern Motors Hard Charger #8 Seth Rowley won the Sunday class race on a damp track, and #14 Alan Faitel won the feature race. All won overall. In Spec Neon #18 David Houser won the Saturday class race and the feature race. #59 Steve Jones came from the rear of the field to win on Sunday morning. In STU #27 Steve Sancricca won the Saturday class race before flipping his car during the ITA - group three race. He was ok. #46 Steve Djelebian took the STU win in both Sunday races.
Group #2
Group two had the F500, FV & FST classes. #19 Jason Steeb set a new class track record in his FST at 1:16.355. In FV the McCormicks battled with rookie Taylor taking two wins to Chuck's one -- her first wins in her young career. In F500 there was great racing with battles between #45 Joe Dunn, #33 Bill Harburn, #60 Brian Brothers and #4 Tom Diehm. Tom took the checkered flag in all three races but it was with intense challenges from his competitors.
Group #3
#7 Bruce "Ironman" Wentzel took the EP sweep including an overall win on Saturday. #98 Alex Pagani won in ITA on Saturday and in the feature race on Sunday. #8 Seth Rowley put on a super drive in the rain on Sunday morning winning the ITA class race and overall. John Bartholme and Mike Patterson won the weekend in FP and GTL respectively. Steve Ives also won the weekend in the X3 class.
Group #4
In the monsoon for the feature race, #37 Danny Kellmeyer claimed top honors to win the weekend in ITE, #84 James Bambard finished second for all three races as well. #86 Tony Mac again this weekend set a new STO record in his BMW with a lap of 1:16.173. #06 Bob Hofmann won the GT1 trophy in both the class races for the weekend. #6 Tyler Williams won his first race of his career in AS, and he won both class races. #17 Bob Robinson survived the rain to win the feature in AS.
Group #5
#4 Randy Shaw followed up his SM win on Saturday with a win in ITS and overall. On Sunday #35 Gregory Steen won the class race. #46 Steve "Jellybean" Djelebian won the feature over the competition and the rain. For the Sunday class race the ITS drivers decided to start in the back of the pack allowing #55 Chris Marsh to take the overall victory over the 18 car field. Chris swept the weekend winning both ITB class races and winning the feature in the rain. #47 Dave Cordier finished second to Chris in all three as well. #90 Steve Steeb and #39 Kris Smith again did battle in ITC with Kris winning both class races. Both skipped the rainy feature.
Group #6
#9 Greg Rempel swept the weekend in CFC including an overall win on Saturday. #17 Jim Lamb in his DSR won overall for the Sunday class race. The feature was cancelled due to the rain. #18 Paul Knight won the Saturday class race in FC, and #52 Rob Allaer won the Sunday class race. Defending FC class champion #14 Melissa Fergus had a rough weekend, ending with losing a wheel and third gear during the Sunday class race.
Bob Robinson mastered the six car field in the Saturday afternoon co-driver race in his Camaro.
The Southern Motors Hard Charger award went to Merritt Scott. The Windsor Life Magazine Worker Award went to Jiffy.
The visiting Great Lakes Challenge Series had exciting action during their races. Eight cars took the green flag on Saturday with #9 Greg Rempel beating #52 Rob Allaer and #55 Carlos Franca. On Sunday, the rains came for the GLC feature. Turn 6 even had a pool on the inside to force the cars into an outside line. But it did not matter, #9 Greg Rempel still was the class of the field. #52 Rob Allaer took second with a mirror full of #6 Bruce MacDonald.
