Group #1 (SM, SN)
Spec Miata was 15 cars strong throughout the weekend. Even though he only qualified 5th, Seth Rowley in his #81 Miata was the class of the field taking the weekend sweep (Saturday class race, Sunday class race and Sunday feature race wins). #4 Randy Shaw (with a new paint), #6 Doug Spencer and #9 Mike Novak were not too far behind Seth most of the weekend. The racing (as always) is very close in this spec class.
In Spec Neon, Rookie Sean Grogan was also a winner in all three races for the weekend. His #37 Neon lead from pole and beat a veteran field in #44 Greg Krom and #8 Matt Conklin whom had runner up finishes to Sean. The Spec Neon field was six cars strong, this is the group to watch!
Group #2 (FV, F500)
A smaller group with 4 Formula 500 and 2 Formula Vee. Mostly rookies in the field. Veteran #4 Tom Diehm was the class of the field, beating #3 Ted Johnston all weekend in F500. #46 Jared Attaway won both class races in FV while Rookie #54 Chris Bargman picked up the FV feature win.
Group #3
The 2012 race season brings a new mix of classes in groups. This year group #3 consist of ITA, ITS, and ITR. Rookie #36 Garrett Dunn won his first race in ITA in a very well prepare Honda CRX beating the mighty Spec Miata winner #81 Seth Rowley (His car is classified in multiple classes). Seth did win the Sunday class race, but Garrett came back and won the feature. In ITS #4 Randy Shaw battled it out with #74 Bruce "Ironman" Wentzel for the win. Randy swept the weekend in ITS. Only one car was in ITR this weekend, Rookie #8 Mark Beyer, he made a good showing in his Mustang. In the feature ITA #33 Rodger Outland unfortunately put his car on its roof. Rodger was very much ok and the car looks fixable based on reports. We will see if he makes it out for the next race weekend
Group #4 (AS, ITE, GT1, GT2, STO, STU, T1, T2)
The Ground Pounders hit the track and it was a lighter field then usual. Only ten cars in the field. The Saturday class race, and Sunday feature race, Vern Roberts in his T1 Corvette took the overall and T1 victories. #86 Tony Mac in his BMW won in STO (He took all three race wins). #7 Steve Djelebian won in AS (He also took all three race wins). #06 Bob Hoffmann and #11 Gordon Leslie took wins in GT1 and GT2 respectively. Second generation driver #2 Chris Capaldi took the T2 victory (He won both class races). In STU, #31 Christian Machado was the victor (He also won the feature).
Sunday's class race had #06 Bob Hoffmann taking the overall win in his GT1 Oldsmobile. #38 Lynn Kraft won in STU.
In the feature, rookie #48 Dave Geloneck took the victory in T2
Group #5 (ITB, ITC, IT7, STL, EP, FP, HP, GTL, SRF)
With the restructure of groups, this one was 26 cars strong. Winning overall and in STL, #9 Michael Novak in his Miata, he took both class races. In IT7, #8 Bob Cross beat #17 Andrew Surratt (Bob, swept the weekend, with Andy in the runner-up spot each race). In EP, #74 Bruce Wentzel swept the weekend. In HP, #92 Eric Richardson was the winner in the class race on Saturday, but unfortunately had a blown engine during the Sunday class race. In FP, #14 Steve Ives, beat another veteran #32 Rich Johnson for the win, Steve won both class races. In a smaller then usual ITB field, #41 Sean Conley was the victor in his Prizm (He swept the weekend). His sister, #39 Katie Conely won ITC in an old Kristian Smith Honda CRX (She also won the all three races).
#81 Seth Rowley won the feature overall and in STL in his Miata. #93 Ted Russell won the feature in FP.
Group #6
In DSR, #8 Ralph Provitz won overall and in class on Saturday...unfortunately he forgot to go to tech after the race and was DQed. He was not alone in this mistake, and it handed the DSR win to #65 Vaughan Scott. #4 Corey Collins, outlasted #52 Rob Allaer in FC on Saturday.
For the Sunday class race, #8 Ralph again beat the field after starting in the back and beat #12 Rob Shick. #52 Rob took the FC win.
The Feature race had #12 Rob Shick picking up his first win of the 2012 season in DSR, #52 Rob Allaer picked up the feature win in FC
#17 Bob Robinson won the co-driver / rookie race on Saturday afternoon. He beat #5 Dave Campbell by less then a second.
Race #2 will be hitting the track in two short weeks. Take a break this weekend and enjoy the Detroit Grand Prix, but racing at Waterford Hills will be back June 9th and 10th. The Spec Miata action was intense the last weekend, so get to the track early, because they are the first group on track!
